Dress, 1840-1849

Back To Era Before the Civil War

Blue brocaded silk
Gift of Karen Bearde

This dress is thought to have been a wedding dress worn by the Stewart family of the Kennett Square/Unionville area. The bodice of this dress has a wide neckline which is covered with a capelet or pelerine. This allows the wearer to transition from day time to evening attire or in the case of a wedding, from modest church apparel to a dress appropriate for a reception celebration. The pelerine is embellished with pinked scallops which were cut into the fabric using a sharp metal die and mallet.
