Dress, about 1885

Red and navy plaid check wool
Bequest of Thomas D. Smedley

Jennie M. Jones dress wore this dress at age 7. This red and navy paid check fabric is similar to a black and red checked pattern known as buffalo plaid which was traded with Native Americans for buffalo pelts in the 1800s. Reminiscent of cowboys and lumber jacks, this pattern has masculine associations but the lace collar, ruching, and red bow provide feminine flair. The red dress is featured in the Fashion Plates Era.
