Elizabeth H. Comley Howell wore this dress when she married Joshua R. Howell in 1888. Elizabeth was born in 1842, the daughter of Emmor and Hannah Bowman Comley. In 1876, she studied medicine and graduated from the Women’s Medical College of Philadelphia. A year after her marriage, she founded the West Philadelphia Hospital for Women to provide a place where women could be treated by women. She practiced medicine until 1891 when she moved to her husband’s country home, O’ermead in East Bradford. The Woman's Hospital of Philadelphia continued until 1964 when it was absorbed by the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Elizabeth died in 1912.
