Exhibition Sponsorship
The Chester County Historical Society will implement a multi-phase plan to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War starting on September 22, 2011 with a Documentation Day followed by several themed events throughout the year and into 2012. Our exhibit On the Edge of Battle: Chester County and the Civil War will open October 2012. 2,000 square feet will be dedicated to this interactive exhibition located in the main gallery of our Horticultural Hall. The Hall is a historically appropriate setting for this exhibit, as it served as a venue for orators such as Frederick Douglass and for political conventions and organizations, such as the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. It later became the home of the McCall Post of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic), a fraternal organization of Union veterans.
On the Edge of Battle will connect visitors to an event that shaped our region and changed our nation. The years leading up to the Civil War were tumultuous, as abolitionists, dissenters and supporters of the Union battled over ideas of freedom and democracy. During the war the fight for hearts and minds continued, as public meetings came under attack and a local anti-Lincoln newspaper was shut down by the federal government. The initial elation felt by many gave way to grief as the death toll mounted and the war dragged on. As some despaired over the exhausting conflict, others saw opportunities, whether it was to remake society by ending slavery or to profit by finding substitutes to serve in the place of drafted men.
The exhibit, funded by community support, will tell the stories of the war through the voices of people who experienced it, both on the battlefield and on the home front. Letters, diaries, photographs and uniforms are just some of the original items from the CCHS collection that will make these forgotten lives real. Visitors will hear the words and see the faces of the men, women, and children who went about their lives knowing that things could be changed suddenly and forever by news from the front. On the Edge of Battle will also examine the political and social issues of the Civil War era, such as equality, freedom of the press and dissent during wartime. Debate over these issues as well as the war’s legacy continues to this day, 150 years after the attack on Fort Sumter.
