IN BETWEEN YOUR TRIPS to the shore, the Poconos, and the pool, take a trip through history this summer at the Chester County Historical Society (CCHS). For people of every interest and age, CCHS provides the perfect escape during long, hot days. Whether you’re looking for a way to entertain Great-Aunt Abigail who just came to town, or you want to get away for a few hours of adventure without leaving the area, you’re sure to find fun at CCHS.

On the Edge of Battle: Chester County and the Civil War

Travel back in time 150 years. Discover a period when our nation was in turmoil and divided in war. The exhibit, “On the Edge of Battle,” tells the story of how the Civil War affected Chester County residents and how they, in turn, helped determine the course of the conflict. Rare artifacts, personal recollections, rich imagery, and hands-on activities bring this seminal period in American history to life in local context.

Lead exhibition sponsors include the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and DNB First. Exhibit ends September 28, 2013.

History Lab: For Kids of All Ages

Explore the past through hands-on activities. Dress up in Victorian clothing, play an old-fashioned parlor game, or tackle a puzzle or building activity. Get close—really close—to artifacts from the past or see what adventure a book has to offer. In this special room kids will never hear the words, “Don’t touch that!”

Track Your Origins: Genealogy and Research

Did you know that CCHS’s library contains half a million manuscripts that document more than 300 years of history? Visit the library and become a sleuth—sift through old newspapers, letters, maps, and published volumes. Whether you are a genealogist, historic-home researcher, or a curious learner with a specific interest, our librarians will walk you through the process of discovering the past through original research.

Gift Shop

Find a treasure to take home or a gift you won’t find elsewhere. The term “shop local” takes on a new meaning at the Chester County Historical Society. CCHS’s gift shop highlights local history through hundreds of books perfect for beach or poolside reading. It also features products made by local artists and artisans, and delightful history-related toys and games. Place a custom order for a photograph from CCHS’s photo archives. CCHS members receive a 10% discount.

History on Tap, July 16

Imbibe in history, food and fun at the next evening of “History on Tap,” an ongoing series about history, held at local restaurants and bars. On July 16, the Social Lounge will be the host for History on Tap where the Dill Pickle Old Time Orchestra mixes old time mountain music and bluegrass with selections of early American sheet music found in CCHS’s collections… with a few fun history lessons in between. Free program. Great food and drink for purchase.
