Dress, 1830-1840

Back To Era Before the Civil War

Turkey red printed cotton
Left dress: Gift of M. Emma Brown
Right dress: Gift of Mrs. Wendell F. Oliver

These two dresses are rare examples of clothing made with Turkey red fabric. It is impossible to know with certainty how many women’s or children’s dresses were made with Turkey red printed cotton by looking at black and white photographs. However, the quilts of the same period (1830s to 1850s) reveal that the fabric was very popular at the time.
