See history unfold through the eyes of an artist!
An exhibit of original paintings and historical objects.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:
World Around Humphry Marshall will be an artistic exploration of Pennsylvania’s history through the artistic vision of acclaimed artist/guest curator Adrian Martinez. The exhibition, opening in November of 2016 at the Chester County Historical Society, will showcase a unique series of twelve original paintings depicting the evolution of Chester County from frontier to farmland in the eighteenth century, as well as complementary artifacts from the CCHS collection. During this period in Chester County’s history, ordinary people as well as the “great and strange” residents of the area were witness to, and sometimes participants in, Pennsylvania’s transformation from colony to the cultural and financial “heartbeat of America.”
This show will focus on well-known local figure Humphry Marshall, the botanist, astronomer, stone mason and farmer and others of his era like the Englishmen Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon and their five years of work “drawing the line” in Pennsylvania; and Indian Hannah, known as “last of the Lenape in Chester County” who worked both as guide for Mason and Dixon and a major source of Native American herbal lore for Humphry Marshall. The cycle of original paintings will function as a poetic narrative of this time period in Chester County, while the artifacts from the CCHS collection, and other area collections, will be drawn together using scholarship focusing on the eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
