Discover Ireland: Passport Cultural Series

Irish culture will be featured June 20 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at Chester County Historical Society.  Harpist and storyteller Joanna Mell and the McDade-Cara Dancers will perform as part of the Historical Society’s Passport Cultural Series.

Frederick Douglass and Horticultural Hall

Frederick Douglass has a strong connection to Chester County, he visited it through all the decades of his life after his escape from enslavement. CCHS is delighted to have the ca. 1848 daguerreotype of Douglass in the collection for this reason.

Douglass spoke twice in Horticultural Hall, today’s CCHS’s Museum building, first in 1863 and again in 1875. The hall was in effect a community center for the Borough of West Chester, because it was rented out for a wide variety of events.

How The Frederick Douglass Daguerreotype Came To CCHS

How was it that a gift made from one freedom fighter to another, was gifted again, so that Frederick Douglass’ daguerreotype came to reside in the very building where he spoke on two occasions?
