 You always find the most remarkable things when you are not looking for them. While checking through the carte-de-visite collection for some good examples of portraiture during the Civil War period, I came across an image of a little boy that was faded and water stained.  I was amazed by what I saw written on the back. It read: “This Photo was carried through the War by Lindley E. Way From 1862 to 1865.”  Wow! This photo was in Way’s pocket – I wonder what kind of action it had seen?

Photo Archives Seeks Images of African American Soldiers for Exhibit

 Chester County Historical Society is seeking images of African American Civil War soldiers either in uniform or civilian dress for display in the On the Edge of Battle exhibition this fall. We are creating a wall of images of soldiers and the people of Chester County for the exhibit; we would like to copy your originals for the display.


The Bride Guide to West Chester Bridal Showcase

The Bride Guide to West Chester Inaugural Bridal Showcase is taking place on Sunday, February 23rd from 11:00am to 2:00pm here at the Chester County Historical Society, 225 North High Street, West Chester PA, 19380.

The event is FREE for brides and 1 of their guests, all others it will be $10 at the door. 

25th Annual NHD History Competition- Junior Division (6th-8th grade) and Awards Ceremony

The NHD History Competion continues for the second day on Saturday, March 8. Hundreds of Chester and Delaware County 6th through 8th grade students will present their original research as performances, documentaries, websites, papers, and exhibits.  An Awards Ceremony with a 25th Anniversary cake cutting and reception will follow the judging.  The Chester County Historical Society will be closed to the public on Saturday, March 8 for this daylong special event.


25th Annual NHD History Competition- Senior Division (9th-12th grade)

The 25th annual regional NHD history competition begins on Friday, March 7 with the judging of Senior Division projects.   Students from across Chester and Delaware Counties will present their original research in five categories: performance, research paper, documentary, website, and exhibit.  The Senior Division is for 9th through 12th grade students.  The Junior Division competition, on Saturday, March 8, welcomes 6th through 8th grade students.
