List of Traveling Trunks Programs
New for 2009 Quilted History Mystery:
What can quilts teach us about American history? Students become history detectives learning about the who, what, when, where, how and why of quilting. The trunk features hands-on objects and primary sources for classroom stations where students learn about different historical perspectives on quilts and quilt-making as they develop critical thinking and literacy skills. Secondary.
“Improving” the Land: The People and Places of Chester County: The trunk, co-developed with the Mill at Anselma, takes a civic problem-solving approach to teaching geography, history, and environmental science using materials from the Mill and the exhibition What is OPEN SPACE? Students research various approaches to land management as they consider what role the mill could play in their own lives today.

The Lenape Children: This trunk introduces students to the lives of Lenape children. It includes reproduction artifacts that focus on the games of the Lenape children, illustrating how play related to daily life.
Intermediate and primary.
The American Revolution in Chester County: A basket, a wooden trunk & a portmanteau present the war from 3 distinct viewpoints: British soldiers, Continental soldiers & Chester County civilians. Rich with objects, this kit provides a five-day series of engaging activities using artifacts and documents.

The Underground Railroad in Chester County: This trunk documents the county’s role in the Underground Railroad, showing the history of slavery in the County and the activities of its early abolitionists. A variety of primary sources identify the people, places, and organizational network that helped as many as 9,000 fugitive slaves travel to freedom. The trunk also includes an A/V presentation, photographs, and teacher’s guide.

Voices from the Past: Chester County and the Civil War: The trunk focuses on the impact of the Civil War on Chester County, its people and community resources. It includes reproduction soldier’s gear, photographs, and copies of diaries, letters, broadsides and governmental records.

Women and Reform: The materials highlight 19th & 20th century abolition, temperance and suffrage movements, primarily spearheaded by women. Reproduction artifacts, primary source documents and photographs are included.

Horace Pippin: With a narrated A/V presentation, this kit tells the life and work of one of Chester County’s most celebrated folk artists and African-American citizens. It includes posters of his paintings and reproduction artifacts.

Bayard Rustin: This trunk about an influential Chester Countian includes written resources, audio material and historic photographs detailing the life and work of Bayard Rustin, an important leader of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
